Rules in the service of style.
Is what we send into the world clear enough, ordered enough, intelligible enough for the world that will receive it? Our language is as our thoughts are. Sometimes the inner world outruns the hand that writes. What we make also helps to make the rules we want, perhaps without knowing it, to live by. If we want to live in a world of order, it begins with language.
In copy-editing I do not stop at commas and typing errors. I also attend to tone, structure, expression, and the way a text moves. Sometimes a small correction is enough. Sometimes the text needs a little more air, order, or clarity.
By agreement I can also recast the style, or adjust the language to the purpose, the audience, and the tone you want.
